How to Prepare for Garage Door Repair

Garage door serviceman working on a garage door repair

Although we are fully equipped to complete your garage repair, there are a couple of small tasks you can do in advance to make the job faster and easier to complete. Namely, cleaning up the area so technicians can move around efficiently.

Each garage door repair needs a different amount of space, so you’ll need to clean specific areas in your garage depending on the job.

1. Garage Door Replacement

If it is time for you to replace your garage door or sections of your garage door, then you need to clear a larger portion of your garage. After you schedule a technician to come to your home, you’ll need to prepare the space by removing everything between the tracks and past the end of the overhead tracks.

If you park a car in the garage, this means moving it out. If you use your garage mainly for storage, this means making sure there is no yard equipment, boxes, or toys blocking the work area. It’s important you remove any troublesome odds and ends that could interrupt the work.

2. Garage Door Opener Replacement

When you’re ready to replace your garage door opener, you’ll need to clear about three feet under the opener and three feet along the door where it will shut. The opener will be on the ceiling of your garage several feet behind the door.

3. Replacing Rollers and Springs (and other small repairs)

Smaller repairs, like replacing rollers and springs, don’t require quite as much space to work as a garage door replacement, but you’ll still need to make sure you provide at least three feet along the door where it will shut.

4. Don’t Forget Fido

If your pet often hangs out in the garage or the yard, then bring them in or move them to another area before the technicians arrive. Even the nicest pets don’t always love workers, and they could be a hazard for technicians on ladders.

If you have any questions about what you need to do before the technician arrives, don’t hesitate to give us a call at 405.579.3667 (3667).
